ABOUT
The New Institute’s 2024/25 Fellowship convened humanities and social science experts to critically examine and reimagine capitalism’s role in contemporary society.
The Fellowship gathered a diverse group of academics and practitioners to explore the theme of Re-Thinking Capitalism, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and exposure to new perspectives. Fellows addressed pressing sub-themes such as the challenges of climate change and the degrowth movement, the impact of market forces on food systems, the increasing marketisation of universities and the phenomenon of academic capitalism, and the need for fiscal and tax reforms to promote equity. Rather than advocating for radical revolution, contributors collectively emphasized pragmatic, reform-oriented approaches, seeking to address capitalism’s shortcomings through structural change within existing frameworks. Their work offers nuanced critiques and actionable pathways toward a more just and sustainable future.
