Integrity Initiatives International at THE NEW INSTITUTE
From 9-11 April, an international group of distinguished lawyers and jurists met at THE NEW INSTITUTE.
Our incoming program chair, Maja Groff, has convened a second committee meeting of a group of eminent legal experts and jurists to draft a model treaty to establish a global anti-corruption court. The initiative, led by a growing coalition of national governments, civil society organizations and individual citizens, is working together to make the court proposed by Integrity Initiatives International (III) a reality.
We, THE NEW INSTITUTE, were pleased to host the second of three meetings in our series with III’s IACC Treaty Committee, whose experts are working to combat global economic crime through the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC).
The initiative has garnered widespread global support, with the Declaration in Support of the Establishment of the IACC endorsed by an impressive array of over 300 prominent individuals and nearly 100 civil society organizations. These supporters include more than 50 former presidents and prime ministers and over 30 Nobel laureates.
Several nations have already committed to work towards the creation of an IACC, including Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Moldova, the Netherlands, Nigeria, and, most recently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The European Parliament has called for the creation of the court and the United Kingdom’s Labour Party has said it will champion the proposal. These countries and many more are actively participating in the initiative.
Maja Groff summarizes the workshop: "The second meeting of the legal experts working on a draft IACC statute was highly productive, laying further strong foundations for the development of a treaty of excellence, serving the international community in tackling this important issue."
Justice Richard Goldstone commented: "III is appreciative of THE NEW INSTITUTE making it possible for members of its treaty committees to meet in person in Hamburg. This has provided crucial encouragement allowing us to anticipate that a first draft of the model treaty will be completed by the end of this year."
