Max Haiven on the Gamed Economy and its Discontents
We invite you to a lunch talk and discussion with Max Haiven, a researcher of capitalism, social movements, financialization, and the imagination.
About
In this presentation, Max Haiven presents some of the key research questions of his current book from MIT Press: The Player and the Played: Gamification, Financialization and (anti-)Fascism. How is financialization linked to games and gamification? What kinds of cultural politics transpire in an economy that, to many, feels like an unwinnable game? How can games help us think about the unique qualities of a 21st century fascism? And what role, if any, do games play in struggles for a better world?
Speaker
Max Haiven is a writer, teacher, and Canada Research Chair in the Radical Imagination. He has written several books, including Palm Oil: The Grease of Empire (2022) and Revenge Capitalism (2020), and has produced research-driven podcasts on topics like financialization, conspiracy theories, and social movements. He leads the ReImagining Value Action Lab (RiVAL) and co-runs Sense & Solidarity, supporting transformative public intellectuals. Currently, he is a senior visiting research fellow at University College London’s Institute for Advanced Studies.
