On Ecocide, Climate Catastrophe and Human Rights

Jay Bernstein's Political Morality for the 21st Century

In conversation with Anna Katsman (Academic Director at THE NEW INSTITUTE), Philosopher Jay Bernstein discusses his shift in focus towards climate catastrophe and emphasizes the urgent need for a new form of life based on two principles: recognizing the intrinsic worth of every human life through human rights, and prohibiting ecocide through international law.

He critiques liberal capitalism for severing social production from reproduction, leading to climate destruction. Bernstein calls for a decommodification of labor and land, stressing that social rights and stewardship are essential for tackling climate issues and ensuring human survival.
