BIO

Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schwenker is an accomplished strategy consultant and advisor. Formerly Chairman of the Advisory Council, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, and long-time CEO of Roland Berger, Burkhard Schwenker transitioned to the role of Senior Fellow at Roland Berger in 2020.
A scholar by training, Burkhard Schwenker earned his degree in mathematics and business administration from the University of Bielefeld, and completed his PhD after gaining management experience as an assistant to the Board of PWA AG. He actively imparts his knowledge by teaching strategic management at the top- ranked HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, xssand Scenario Planning. He is a member of the University Council at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and was previously Deputy at the German Academic Association for Business Research.
Burkhard Schwenker currently serves as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hamburger Sparkasse AG and HASPA Finanzholding, and he also sits on the Supervisory Boards of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Flughafen Hamburg GmbH, and M.M. Warburg & Co.
Beyond his professional and academic commitments, Burkhard Schwenker actively participates in several sociopolitical institutions and foundations, including the ZEIT-Stiftung, the Senat der Wirtschaft e.V, Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, and Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen.

At THE NEW INSTITUTE, Burkhard Schwenker contributes his expertise as a member of the Board of Trustees.

  • What gives you hope?
    As a Christian, my belief in God; as a human being, my conviction that many people are better than we think; as a manager an optimistic view, following Winston Churchill: "A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees an opportunity in every difficulty."

  • How does change happen?

    1. Through a clear forward vision, based on sound scenarios
    2. Through an optimistic attitude
    3. Through well-managed, consistent actions, avoiding too many compromises
