The Art of Listening: How to Create Constructive Dialogue in Politics and Society
Bernhard Pörksen, Wolfgang Schmidt and Nicole Deitelhoff discuss the art of listening at Bucerius Law School.
About
Bucerius Law School is hosting an evening discussion with our fellow Bernhard Pörksen and Wolfgang Schmidt, moderated by our alumna Nicole Deitelhoff at Studium generale.
Listening, being heard, dialogue at eye level, interest in the other person's perspective – these are seemingly euphonious buzzwords for constructive cooperation, but in reality they are empty formulas of political rhetoric. What does it mean to really listen, to question our own convictions, to be open to the world view of others, to meet each other with curiosity in our daily interactions in politics and society? How can we escape the constant irritation and desire for instant condemnation that poison contemporary debates? How can a "politics of listening" succeed in the tension between empathic attention and the preservation of interest-driven power?
In times of constant distraction, disinformation and the urge for quick solutions, our guests will discuss the limits and possibilities of dialogue, the chances of a communicative climate change and the changes in political communication in the context of sudden waves of outrage and a new media reality.
This event is a cooperation of Bucerius Law School with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, curated by Christoph Gottschalk, member of the ZSP advisory board.
