The Planetary Governance program is hosting an international expert meeting from February 3-7, 2025. The meeting will focus on the proposal to reform UNEP and establish a Global Environment Agency (GEA).

About

Our Planetary Governance program is convening an expert meeting to explore proposals aimed at strengthening global environmental governance in response to the urgent need for more effective stewardship of Earth's vital systems.

Key topics of discussion will include proposals to reinforce the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the potential establishment of a Global Environment Agency (GEA). The meeting will also examine interconnected initiatives under the program’s research agenda, such as international judicial and dispute resolution mechanisms, the expansion of global scientific assessment and reporting capacities for comprehensive Earth system monitoring, and the development of Earth system security frameworks.

Sylvia Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen is Associate Professor with the Public Administration and Policy Group of Wageningen University.
Daniel Esty is Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, Yale Law School.
Rakhyun E. Kim is Associate Professor of Earth System Governance, Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University.
Abigail Robinson is Director, Continua.
Andreas Bummel is the Executive Director of Democracy Without Borders.
Alexander Schmidt is Head of Research and Sustainability at Normative, a Swedish enterprise carbon platform.
Adam Day is Head of the Geneva Office of United Nations University Centre for Policy Research.
Sharmini Peries is editor and Vice-President of Communications at the Institute for New Economic Thinking.
